How this educator is getting the cost of an architectural degree under $20K
Joseph Lucido chairs the architecture program at Palomar College in California and presides over the state's coalition of community college architecture programs, after two decades in practice. He has done the arithmetic on what an architecture degree costs and what it delivers, and is building an alternative: a four-year degree in building performance for under $20,000.
Joseph Lucido, President of CCCAP & Chair of Architecture at Palomar College, Palomar College
In this conversation
Joseph's yoke metaphor for student debt, and why he stopped believing that graduates will simply figure it out.
How the coalition and NCARB are widening the on-ramp to licensure while keeping the critical thinking that makes the degree valuable.
The studio projects he describes: designing for a microclimate and then taking the building apart, or adapting a concrete-block building and measuring its thermal performance.
His prediction that insurers and lenders will change what gets built, and that architects, brokers and insurers will end up at the same table.
We have this amazing ability to create positive and powerful thinkers, but then we saddle them with a burden of 150 plus thousand dollars worth of debt.

Joseph's pathway delivers a bachelor's degree for $15,000 to $17,000 in total. One year at a private university costs more than double that.

Takeaways
Schools produce powerful thinkers and then load them with more than $150,000 of debt. The return is not there if graduates cannot use the tools they will need in the office on Tuesday.
Community colleges are foundational, not stepping stones. Palomar's bachelor's in building performance and environmental design will cost $15,000 to $17,000.
Studios should grade climate response and disassembly, not just beauty. A striking form with no regional understanding is not a successful building.
A great form that has no regional understanding isn't a successful building.
