VDC is dead. The replacement job doesn't have a name yet.
Alexis McGuffin is the national director of digital delivery at Suffolk Construction, one of the largest builders in the United States, after a career in virtual design and construction. She leads strategy, org design and teams. Her argument is that the industry made a mistake by building a profession around a software tool, and that the role replacing it does not have a name yet.

In this conversation
The three streams Alexis sees: super users leaving for startups, constructability experts using BIM to do their jobs better, and technicians stranded without a career path.
Why a high-trust contract structure in a low-trust environment does not deliver, and what clients actually want.
Her honesty that some of what VDC produces brings no dollar value to the company or the client.
The one thing she would tell her younger self: learn to sell, and treat presenting like stand-up comedy that improves with practice.
I think that we made a mistake as an industry in creating a profession around a tool.

What the role that replaces VDC looks like.
Trust and contracts
Why contracts cannot manufacture trust, and what she would tell a young Alexis.
If you are required to be able to read drawings for your role, you should learn and you should be able to read a model.

Takeaways
BIM is a noun and VDC is a verb. Building careers around the noun sent the industry's best digital talent out of construction and into software companies.
The digital engineer takes the standards, the contract and the site, and is accountable for extracting the most value from the project, not for coordinating a model.
If reading drawings is required for your role, reading a model should be too. And modelers need finance, project management and leadership, or they will be stuck.
You've got a high trust contract structure and a low trust environment.
